چکیده

Riparian zones with extensive groundwater seeps may allow short-circuiting of groundwater to stream channels and modify groundwater contact with shallow organic soil layers in riparian areas. The controls on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export to an Appalachian headwater stream were examined at Baldwin Creek (southwestern Pennsylvania), where baseflow is derived from multiple surface seeps. DOC inputs from near-stream seeps and DOC transformations along these zones and the main channel were monitored monthly over a one year period (May 2002-2003) using a nested sampling approach. A total of 264 seep samples were collected at the top and the bottom of 15 seeps. Seep samples were analyzed for DOC and nitrogen species along with streamwater and stream discharge at 7 stream stations. After discharging to the land surface at the top of seeps median annual DOC concentrations increased downseep by 41 %. DOC gains occurred largely in seeps fed by deep groundwater flowpaths, as indicated by stable temperatures and sustained discharge throughout the year, rather than in surface-water dominated seeps. Along the main stream channel median annual DOC concentrations were 14% lower than seep bottom concentrations. DOC budgets for seeps and the main stream channel suggested that DOC is released by seep zones but retained by the main channel. During periods of high flow there was a tendency for greater DOC concentrations at the watershed outlet and greater DOC export. These data suggest that seeps provide a source of DOC to the main stream channel and alteration of seep zones or groundwater flowpaths to these zones can affect the delivery of DOC to the channel. Best management practices for headwater streams with dominant seep contributions should consider protection of near seep zones and seep recharge areas. Fluxes of inorganic carbon from two forested catchments in the Appalachian mountains

This study uses long-term records of stream chemistry, discharge and air temperature from two neighbouring forested catchments in the southern Appalachians in order to calculate production of dissolved CO2 and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). One of the pair of catchments was clear-felled during the period of the study. The study shows that: (1) areal production rates of both dissolved CO2 and...

Fluvial organic carbon flux from an eroding peatland catchment, southern Pennines, UK

This study investigates for the first time the relative importance of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) in the fluvial carbon flux from an actively eroding peatland catchment in the southern Pennines, UK. Event scale variability in DOC and POC was examined and the annual flux of fluvial organic carbon was estimated for the catchment. At the event scale, both DO...

Dissolved Organic Carbon Mobilisation in a Groundwater System Stressed by Pumping

The concentration and flux of organic carbon in aquifers is influenced by recharge and abstraction, and surface and subsurface processing. In this study groundwater was abstracted from a shallow fractured rock aquifer and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was measured in observation bores at different distances from the abstraction bore. Groundwater abstraction at rates exceeding the aquifers yiel...

The Effect of Zahab Plain Floodwater Spreading on Soil Organic Carbon Stock

Floodwater spreading (FWS) has an important role in floodwater control, groundwater recharge, restoration and enhancement of vegetation and desertification control. Since the flood causes the transporting of soil particles including organic materials, the floodwater spreading project can be a suitable place to sequestration of organic carbon in sediment yielded by flood. The knowledge of soil o...

Nitrogen retention in the riparian zone of catchments underlain by discontinuous permafrost

1. Riparian zones function as important ecotones that reduce nitrate concentration in groundwater and inputs into streams. In the boreal forest of interior Alaska, permafrost confines subsurface flow through the riparian zone to shallow organic horizons, where plant uptake of nitrate and denitrification are typically high. 2. In this study, riparian zone nitrogen retention was examined in a hig...
